People always rush to read the little cards next to artworks in a museum in hopes of “better understanding” a piece. Combine that with a portable audio tour and you have very little room to make an objective interpretation. Don’t get me wrong, those little cards are very helpful but sometimes they offer too much information. It’s nice to just look at a work of art without knowing when it was painted or what inspired it. In the end, art should be about personal interpretation.
The TATE Liverpool recently launched a great site to give people the chance to share their own interpretations of some of the museum’s pieces. You can add your own comment or read what others thought of a piece. It’s a different way of discussing art and in my opinion, a step in the right direction.
